How Walktober Supports Community Wellbeing Across Coalitions, Partnerships, Alliances, and Networks
Community collaboratives — including coalitions, partnerships, alliances, and regional wellbeing groups — are uniquely positioned to bring organizations together around shared goals.
Join Kathy Snyder, Director of the Midland Area Wellbeing Coalition (MAWC), and HES account managers Emily Doyle and Danielle Meeder for a practical, real-world look at how Walktober succeeds as a collaborative — and what makes the model work so well.

Using the MAWC’s 2025 Walktober pilot as a real-world proof of concept, we’ll explore how a community-led walking challenge helped unite more than 40 organizations,
engage nearly 1,000 participants, and create meaningful momentum around community wellbeing — without adding administrative burden or competing with existing efforts.
You’ll see how Walktober functions from both a collaborative and participant perspective, and learn what to consider if your organization is exploring a shared wellness initiative of its own.

Overview
Community collaboratives — including coalitions, partnerships, alliances, networks, and regional wellbeing initiatives — play a unique role: bringing diverse organizations together around shared goals that no single employer or agency can achieve alone.
Walktober offers a proven way to do exactly that — through an inclusive, community-led walking challenge that is easy to explain, simple to support, and designed to grow in value year after year.
Why Walktober Works for Community Collaboratives
Collaborative-Friendly by Design
- Positioned as a shared community initiative, not owned by any one organization
- Open to member organizations and other groups the collaboratives chooses
- Supports — rather than replaces — existing wellness and engagement efforts.
Low Lift, High Visibility
- Turnkey materials and centralized administration
- Mobile and web access with inclusive tracking options
- Built-in reporting that helps collaboratives tell a clear impact story.
Connection First
- Team participation, shared goals, and community message walls
- Fosters encouragement, visibility, and local pride
- Keeps participation welcoming, not competitive.
Proof of Concept: Midland Area Wellbeing Coalition (MAWC)
In 2025, the Midland Area Wellbeing Coalition partnered with HES to pilot Walktober as a community-wide wellbeing program.
This was our first community-wide, truly accessible initiative, and it was wildly successful. It gave people a fun way to connect that’s different from how they normally interact.
